‘A dirty trophy, no real value!’ Serbian media turns SALTY after Rafael Nadal surpasses Novak Djokovic in GOAT race with 2nd Australian Open title

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal

Serbian media outlets were certainly not pleased with the prospect of Rafael Nadal winning his 21st major title and second Australian Open title. Some of the headlines by popular media outlets are questionable and arrogant to say the least.

Rafael Nadal won his second Australian Open title on Sunday, after defeating Daniil Medvedev in an epic five set comeback. Novak Djokovic, nine time champion in Melbourne and world number one was denied the opportunity to defend his title, as he was deported back home over visa issues.

Let us have a look at some of the outrageous headlines given by Serbian newspapers. ‘The only chance Nadal had of winning the title was with Djokovic out,’ read the headline of Serbian newspaper Informer.

Republika took the matters a bit too far, as the headline read “A dirty trophy,” referring to Nadal’s triumph in Australia. ‘The trophy won by Nadal has no real value,’ the content of the article added.

Nadal has proven he has the build of a champion, but Djokovic remains the best of all time

Another reputed Serbian newspaper, Kurir took a neutral view of the same, and stated that Nadal proved that he is a tru champion with his comeback win in the finals. However, Novak Djokovic still remains the undisputed GOAT. “Nadal has proven he has the build of a champion, but Djokovic remains the best of all time,” Kurir’s headline read, as quoted by Blick.

Nadal ruined his record for him,” Blic wrote. This is surely not a way to undermine an achievement of this magnitude. One can understand the emotions of Serbian media after what happened in Melbourne last month, but they tend to take things a bit too far at times.

Rafael Nadal now stands a chance to extend his Grandslam lead over Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic at the French Open in May-June 2022. With Roger Federer certainly out, and with question marks over Novak Djokovic’s participation, Nadal enters the certain favorite to claim his 14th French Open title and 22nd overall.
