Rafael Nadal won the Australian Open 2022 title after playing an unbelievable match against the world No.2 Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev was on his way towards winning his second grand slam title. He was up by two sets and was dominating Nadal.

However, the great champion in Nadal wasn’t ready to give up. He fought until the last moments of the second set but still lost. While coming back into the third set, Nadal made some astonishing changes and started playing a much better game.

During a post-match interview when he was asked about his feelings after being two sets down, he said, “I was tired after the first two sets already. But I had chances in the second two times and I was a bit nervous. But against Daniil, it is always difficult for him to change the dynamic of the match. He is always ready to find solutions and that’s why I believe he is an amazing champion and is going to win a lot of slams.”

When asked about his comeback in the next three sets, Nadal said, “I don’t know I just told myself to keep believing. I lost a lot of times here, having an advantage on this court. So maybe today it’s the other way. So I need to fight until the end, I need to believe, it might be almost impossible to win but I can’t stop fighting until the end.”

Nadal referred to his 5-set finals at the Australian Open 2012 against Novak Djokovic and another 5-setter against Roger Federer in 2017. In both the matches Nadal had the advantage in the beginning and ended up losing both matches.

Nadal showed great determination in the last three sets and he gave it his all just to compete against Medvedev. In the end, it was the 35-year-old who created history and won his 21st grand slam at the Rod Laver Arena.
