Emma Raducanu and Rafael Nadal
After Emma Raducanu and Rafael Nadal, Belinda Bencic became the third player to test positive for Covid-19 after Mubadala World Tennis Championship at Abu Dhabi. The Olympic champion has confirmed on her Twitter that she has tested positive and has very severe symptoms.
Bencic also talked about her plans on making it to Melbourne for the Australian Open. She confirms that although her preparations will be affected due to the virus, she will make her way to Melbourne as soon as possible.
Belinda Bencic on getiing Covid after Emma Raducanu and Rafael Nadal
Bencic wasn’t the first to get affected by the virus in Abu Dhabi. Young sensation Emma Raducanu and the former world No.1 Rafael Nadal also contacted the virus in the same tournament. These cases suggest that there were lapses in the safety and security at the MWTC, which led to the tournament becoming a Covid-19 hotspot.
Bencic informed her Twitter followers about her testing positive and also discussed her symptoms, “Unfortunately and even though I am fully vaccinated, I recently tested positive for COVID-19, I am currently isolating and taking all precautionary (measures) to get through this as best as possible as I am experiencing quite severe symptoms (fever, aches, chills).”
She also added about her plans of flying down to Melbourne next year, “While the timing is not ideal – as I was in the final stages of my preparations for the Australian Open swing – I will make my way to Australia as soon as I am cleared and past the isolation period.”
This isn’t the first tour where a number of Covid-19 cases have been reported. Similar events ensued at Novak Djokovic’s Adria Tour. Where three people including Novak Djokovic himself tested positive for Covid-19 and the event was called off in June 2020. Novak Djokovic who was responsible for the conduction of the event received a lot of scrutiny for not maintaining proper levels of Covid-19 protocol at the tour.
However, it will be interesting to see who will be scapegoated after the events at the MWTC in Abu Dhabi. It will be interesting to watch if this was a mistake by the organizers, the players, or the fans.
