Emma Raducanu has been one of the most hyped-up players on the WTA tour for obvious reasons. She stunned the world last year at Flushing Meadows by becoming the first-ever qualifier in tennis history to win a grand slam title. Interestingly, the 2021 US Open was only her second major but the teen still managed to win it, without dropping a set.

Ever since then, Raducanu was projected as the next big thing in women’s tennis but so far, she hasn’t delivered as promised. She bowed out of the initial rounds of the next tournaments she played and then had a poor start to the 2022 season where she lost her second-round match. She followed it up with an opening-round exit at Guadalajara, where she was seeded No.1.

This week, she was competing at Indian Wells for the first time and notched up a good victory in the opening round against in-form Caroline Garcia in three sets 6-1,3-6,6-1. Raducanu, who naturally was elated by the result took to social media to express her feelings.

‘Realistically my goals were like winning one round in the main draw of a Slam’: Emma Raducanu

After her victory, Emma also revealed how the burden of expectations took a sudden toll on her. She said that post her US Open triumph, everybody expected her to win titles continuously which when looked into in hindsight, seems very impossible for a teenager with so little experience on the court. She also added that her realistic expectations before US Open were to win one round at a time which she achieved in Australia this year.

“After US Open everyone just suddenly expected me to win everything. But realistically, before that my goals were like winning one round in the main draw of a Slam. I did that in Australia, that to me last year probably would have made my year, to be honest,” Raducanu said.

After a solid second-round victory, Raducanu will now lock horns against Petra Martic of Croatia in the third round on Sunday.
