World No. 47 Ajla Tomljanovic registered the 4th Top-10 win of her career as she defeated World No. 6 Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the 2nd round of the Indian Wells 2021. Muguruza had come into the tie on the back of a title run at the recently concluded 2021 Chicago Classic and was the favourite for this match as well but Ajla got the better of the Spaniard.

It will be a good confidence booster win for the Australian who has seen a dip in her form since she made the run to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships only to be defeated by the eventual champion and compatriot Ashleigh Barty. Since then she is yet to reach another quarter-final.

“I get really happy when I get into these moments where I get nervous and I manage to stay calm and focus on just what’s on the task. Even when I have in the past missed my chances or had really tough losses against the top players, you’re like, well okay, I’m going to learn from it. But next time you’re in the same position, it’s never really the same. It’s always a new moment.

But you can take the lessons before and apply it. I’m just happy that I kind of took everything I could from all the losses before and just did kind of my best to react in a way that will benefit me. I knew that I could have again lost putting myself in good situations. But I’m going out there knowing that I’m capable and I can come up with the good when it matters,” said Ajla after the match.

“Now that I’m a little bit older and I’m making runs that I haven’t before, it also makes me appreciate it a lot more. It makes me think, Why wasn’t I happier when I was 20, 21 making the fourth round of the French? That was awesome,” added Ajla as she reflected back on her win over Muguruza and how things have changed over the time for her.

With the win over Muguruza, Ajla reaches the 3rd round of the Indian Wells for the first time in her career, she will now meet Tamara Zindasek who is making her debut in the desert this year and comes from a 3-set win over Ana Konjuh in the 2nd round after having got a bye in the 1st round.
