‘Loss at the 2021 US Open finals is a learning process for Novak Djokovic but I’m sure he will come back strong,’ says Albert Corretja
Novak Djokovic
World No.1 Novak Djokovic was shocked in the 2021 US Open finals by World No.2 Daniil Medvedev. Not only did the Russian stop the Serb from winning his 21st Grand Slam, but Medvedev also snatched away Djokovic’s dream of winning the Calendar Slam.
While plenty has already been said and written about the finals in New York, the top seed made it clear that he was not himself, due to the mental and physical fatigue he had to endure throughout the season.
Although the top seed credited Medvedev for his sublime performance, the 34-year-old also opined on how his own movements were restricted during the match.
Reflecting on the finals, former Spanish professional Alex Corretja told Euro Sport that Djokovic was mentally and physically spent, but sounded confident that the 20-time Grand Slam champion will be back stronger, going forward.
Alex Corretja believes Djokovic will come back stronger physically and mentally after an exhausting 2021 campaign. “This is a learning process for Novak as well and I’m sure he will come back strong.”
The former two-time Roland Garros finalist also added that Djokovic should be pleased with his heroics in 2021 and will plans his next course of action for the future. However, the top-ranked player should initially enjoy his time away from tennis.
“He needs to realise that his season was perfect and it was just that he lost a couple of matches. For him it’s going to relieve the whole pressure and he will take on new goals for the future.”
Djokovic can afford to chill
“And that will come again in winning the Australian Open next year, or even the ATP finals at the end of this year if he decides not to take a little bit of time off to chill,” the 47-year-old Spaniard
Despite his loss in New York, the 20-time Grand Slam champion still holds a clear advantage in the ATP rankings, over the Russian. It will be interesting to see how the remaining part of the season unfolds.
