Alexander Bublik stuns Alexander Zverev to clinch his maiden ATP title at the Montpellier Open
Alexander Bublik
Alexander Bublik notched up one of the biggest wins of his career, with a stunning win over top seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets to win his maiden ATP title at the Open Sud de France 2022.
Bublik was dominant throughout the match and outplayed Zverev with his flawless serve and crafty net game. The Kazakhstani fired 8 aces and won 86% of his first serves as emerged victorious against the German 6-4, 6-3. Zverev was the favorite to win the tournament but looked completely out of sorts in the final and struggled with his second serve, which has been the German’s weakness for most of his career.
After facing heartbreak in his previous four ATP finals, Bublik finally managed to clear his final hurdle and win the title. With this win, the 24-year old is assured of a career-high ranking on Monday, he is currently ranked No.35. Bublik came into this match with a 0-6 record against top-5 players and a 0-4 record in the finals, but the Russian-born Kazakh was in complete control throughout the match and produced a flawless performance to earn his second consecutive win against the reigning Olympic champion.
Potential World No.1 to losing in ATP 250 finals-Alexander Zverev
Zverev had a chance to top the ATP rankings with a good showing at the Australian Open, but the German lost in straight sets to Denis Shapovalov in the fourth round. He was one of the favorites to win the Opening Slam and potentially displace Novak Djokovic as the World No.1, but he failed to prove his potential once again.
Following his early exit, Zverev accepted a wild card to enter the Montpellier Open, which was surprising as he had little to gain from this tournament. Now his loss to Bublik further dents the confidence of Zverev, who was once pegged to be the one to spearhead the ‘new Big 3’.
