“Sascha at it again” Alexander Zverev voted Germany’s Sportsman of the year

World No. 3 on the ATP Tour, Alexander Zverev had a fantastic season on the Tour in 2021. Apart from winning titles, the German also reached the career-high ranking of World No. 3 having spent the majority of the season in the Top-10 but broke into the Top-3 in the final few weeks of the season.
As he won multiple titles on the Tour, Sascha Zverev wins yet another honour in 2021 as the German is voted Germany’s best male athlete of the year for his performances throughout the year.
Following Zverev, swimmer Florian Wellbrock finished second having won two medals at the Olympics held this year while ski jumper Karl Geiger finished third in the award ceremony to celebrate the nation’s athletes at the ‘Sportler des Jahres‘ Awards.
Alexander Zverev’s 2021 season recap

Zverev had a difficult start to the 2021 season as he lost in the semi-finals of the ATP Cup and then lost in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. After a shocking first-round exit in Rotterdam, he won the title in Acapulco, his first of the season but then saw another string of poor results in his next 3 tournaments.
He broke the streak at the Madrid Masters and then made it to the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters before reaching the semi-finals of the French Open. He had a difficult time on the Grass season losing in the 2nd round in Halle and then lost in the 4th round of the Wimbledon Championships.
His next appearance came at the Tokyo Olympics where he dropped only 1 set en route to claiming the gold medal, Germany’s first tennis gold in 29 years and returned to the tour with his 2nd Masters title in Cincinnati. He then played at the US Open where he lost in the semi-finals and then suffered a quarter-final defeat at the Indian Wells.
He went on to win the title in Vienna before suffering a semi-final defeat at the Paris Masters. Having qualified for the ATP Finals, Zverev dropped just 2 sets on his way to claiming his 2nd Year-End championship title, his 6th of the season making him the most successful player in terms of trophies won across the WTA and ATP Tours.
