Alexander Zverev, third seed at Australian Open 2022 and billed as one of the favorites kick started his campaign, with a straight sets victory over fellow German, Daniel Altmaier. Despite being a straight sets victory, it was by no means a cakewalk for the German, as he had to be out there for nearly three hours.
Alexander Zverev defeated Daniel Altmaier by a score-line of 7-6, 6-1, 7-6 in the final match of Day 1 at the iconic Rod Laver Arena. The third seed was put to test in the first set, when both players held their serve which forced a tiebreaker.
Zverev held his nerve, as he won the first set tiebreaker, 7-3. The second set was a rather easy one for the German, as he won it pretty convincingly. Again, the final set was a bit tough for Sascha, as he made a bit too may errors towards the end. He claimed the final set in the tiebreaker, winning it 7-1.
Alexander Zverev storms into Round 2 of AO 2022
Alexander Zverev served up 14 aces during the whole match, whereas, Altmaier managed just 1 ace. However, a concern for the third seed would be the number of double faults to his name. Zverev had six double faults during the game, and he will surely have to work on his second serve.
Alexander Zverev had 18 break point opportunities. He squandered most of them, but was able to break on 4 occasions. Moreover, he was broken just once during the entire game. Zverev won above 80% of his points on first serve.
In total, the third seed won 124 points, compared to his opponent’s tally of 94 points. Next up, Zverev faces a stern challenge in the form of Australian, John Millman. Millman defeated Feliciano Lopez in four sets in the first round on Monday, as he was cheered on by the home fans. The second round match will be played on Wednesday, and it promises to be a good encounter.
