Swiss legend Roger Federer is quickly losing his claim to the many records he set, with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on his heels.

Recently, Rafael Nadal tied Federer for the most Grand Slam titles, and he is set to overtake him in 2021. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic secured his sixth year-end World No. 1 position, moving one ahead of both Nadal and him. The Serb is also agonizingly close to his record of most weeks as World No. 1, in pole position to take that record too.

However, tennis analyst Catherine Whitaker believes that Roger can take one record which the other two cannot dream of reaching anytime soon.

What record can Roger Federer still break?

Roger Federer

In a recent episode of The Tennis Podcast, Whitaker gave her take on how Federer’s troubles with injuries have led to him falling behind on the records. She also pointed out that the Swiss great could try breaking one record that he is very close to doing.

Currently sitting at 103 career singles titles, Federer is close to the record of most singles titles. Set by Jimmy Connors, his tally of 109 titles was once thought to be insurmountable. But, 39-year-old Federer could very well get across the line, if he chooses his tournaments wisely.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic aren’t even close to the record, both sitting at 84 and 77 titles respectively. So, Roger could stake claim to this record and make it his own for a long time.

She said, “The only really significant record that Federer can go for that the other two are very unlikely to get … is the all-time titles currently held by Jimmy Connors… Could you imagine if we see him entering a behind-closed-doors Sofia this time next year. If he thinks ‘right, my exit strategy is …just forget it, I’ll just go for that 110 titles’, Sofia here I come.”

She jocularly referred to Sofia as being one of the lower-tier tournaments that Federer could participate in to get to the 110-title record.

Roger Federer had called off his 2020 schedule after electing to have surgery on his knee. He chose to take an extended recovery period in order to be fully fit. He will next play at the 2021 Australian Open, also hinting that he will participate in the Asian swing and the Olympics.
