2-time defending Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray pulled out of the Men’s Singles event at the Tokyo Olympics at the last minute. She was scheduled to face 9th seed Felix Auger Aliassime in the first round today on centre court in the third match but was replaced by Australian Max Purcell.
Murray, who won the 2012 Olympic Gold at home by beating Roger Federer in the Final, and Novak Djokovic in the semifinal, and won the gold in Rio 2016 by beating Juan Martin Del Potro in the Final was aiming to become the first tennis player to win three successive gold medals at the Olympics but unfortunately, that won’t be the case.
He has decided to pull out due to a quad strain. “The medical staff have advised me against playing in both events, so I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe,” he said.
His replacement, Aussie Max Purcell will battle it out against Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime in the first round.
Andy Murray to continue his quest for gold in doubles
Meanwhile, Andy Murray will continue to play doubles alongwith partner Joe Salisbury at Tokyo 2020. The duo looks in solid form and have already knocked out the No.2 seed pairing of Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round on the opening day of the competition.
The British pair will now face German duo of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Putz in the second round.
