Anett Kontaveit continues exceptional form and extends record after powering to the Qatar Open 2022 final
Anett Kontaveit made a stellar comeback to defeat top seed Maria Sakkari 5-7, 7(7)-6(4), 7-5 in the finals of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy to lift her 6th WTA title. The Estonian came back from a set and a breakdown to emerge victorious in a grueling 3-hour encounter.
The Estonian has now followed up the spectacular performance with another spectacular run at the WTA Qatar Open, beating Jelena Ostapenko in the semi-finals to set up a title clash with Iga Swiatek. The 26-year-old has been in good form since the start of the new season.
Kontaveit continues incredible streak after reaching Qatar final
4th seed Anett Kontaveit’s seven-month hot streak continued with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of No.15 seed Jelena Ostapenko in just 68 minutes in the Qatar TotalEnergies Open semifinals.
The result put Kontaveit into her seventh final since last August, five of which she has converted into titles so far. The last of those was in St. Petersburg Open a fortnight ago, and the Estonian has extended her winning streak from that tournament to nine matches so far in Doha. Kontaveit also sealed a place in her second career WTA 1000 final following Wuhan 2018, where she was runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka.
Earlier in the tournament, Kontaveit revealed that she was confident in herself to go deeper into the tournament after his win over Ons Jabeur. The Estonian also revealed that she has stopped putting mental barriers during clashes, which has helped her perform better.
“I think I have this confidence that I can go deep every week that I’m playing, and I’m not setting these mental barriers to myself that I used to do. I’m very happy with being in the semifinals, but I also feel like I can still go deeper, I can still do more,”– said Kontaveit.
The 26-year-old would now look to seal her second consecutive titles in what has been an exceptional start to the year except the Australian Open blip.
