“As a spectator, I would love to see Daniil Medvedev play” Stan Wawrinka amazed by the new World no. 1
Daniil Medvedev and Stan Wawrinka
Former World No. 3, Stan Wawrinka, is back after an entire year of hiatus. His last tournament was the Qatar Open in Doha, where he lost to Lloyd Harris incurring a terrible foot injury causing the Swiss player to sit outside the court to recover and rehabilitate. The seriousness of his injury forced him to go into surgery, forcing him to withdraw from all tournaments for an entire year.
Regardless of his injury, Stan Wawrinka is a formidable player. There is no doubt that his injury will affect his upcoming games. However, the 16-time ATP title winner was at a point where he challenged the big three, making every encounter as intense and difficult. He has prevailed over the 21-time grand slam champion Rafel Nadal three times, the Swiss legend Roger Federer three times, and the Serbian No. 1 Novak Djokovic six times.
As he prepares for his return to action after a long spell on the sidelines, the 3-time Grand Slam champion shared some thoughts on the current World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev with the Swissman full of praise for the Russian superstar who became the first player in 18 years to reach the top of the ATP rankings apart from the Big-4.
Stan Wawrinka in awe of Daniil Medvedev
The Swiss player talks about Daniil Medvedev and his rightful position in the category of No.1 Men’s singles. “I think what he’s doing is exceptional. He always finds solutions, he is a fighter, he can get upset when things go wrong but he has a good character as a fighter. He is able, precisely, and we see it in all his big matches, whether he wins them or loses, to change tennis during the game. His playing speaks to me.”
“As a spectator, I would go to see a player like that because I think it’s beautiful to see. He does everything. That he became number 1 is deserved. I’ve said it all my career: ranking doesn’t lie,” added Wawrinka during his interview with L’Equipe.
Stan Wawrinka on the upcoming French Open
The three-time grand slam champion began by saying, “Yes, Roland-Garros, yes. People often ask me why I’m trying to come back after my injury and carry on, but it’s because I’m passionate about tennis, I love the spectators.”
He further went on to say, “When I walk out on the court, I make sure I remember that it’s a game. The whole basis of tennis is that we tell children to “go and play”! A lot of people forget that when they turn professional: they see tennis as a job. What motivates me the most is reminding myself that I’m going to play, have fun and enjoy myself.”
