Tennis at Tokyo Olympics 2020: Top seed Ash Barty bows out in the first round

Ash Barty

Top seed and Wimbledon Champion Ashleigh Barty of Australia faced a shocking defeat in the hands of Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in the opening round of Tokyo Olympics. Barty, who was one of the strongest contender for gold, lost in straight sets 4-6,3-6 on centre court.

Barty was making her Olympic debut but despite being the top seed, had to bite the dust. She was coming into the Olympics after winning the prestigious Wimbledon title and was in excellent form. But against Sorribes Tormo in the first round, she looked completely out of form and wasn’t able to cope up with the heat.

She couldn’t gain any momentum and struggled with her serve. The Spaniard capitalized on it and broke her early in the first set. An out of sort Barty didn’t move well either and eventually lost the opening set 4-6.

But all wasn’t done as Barty usually comes back to win the match and hence everybody had faith in her. She tried to swing momentum on her side but unfortunately for her, it just wasn’t her day as Sorribes Tormo stepped her game up and took another early break in the second set. She went on to win the set 6-3 and registered the biggest win of her career.
