AB de Villiers and Ash Barty
World No. 1 on the WTA Tour for nearly 2 years now, Ash Barty continues to dominate the WTA side of the sport. The Australian despite missing tournaments remains at the top of the ranking for the lead which she has taken in the WTA rankings with Barbora Krejcikova, newly crowned World No. 2 currently 2907 points behind the 3-time Grand Slam champion.
With the news of the month dropped by NFL great Tom Brady announcing his return in less than 2 months’ time, the sporting world is buzzing to see the 44-year old return to the sport. Amidst this, the official Twitter handle of Brisbane Heats, a franchise in the Big Bash League (BBL) of Australia, tweeted who the fans think should return to the sport.
The post tagged cricket legends Andrew Flintoff, Brendon McCullum and AB de Villiers along with Ash Barty. Barty had taken a hiatus from tennis in 2015 and had tried her hand in representing Australia in Women’s Cricket. While she could not make an international appearance, she was part of the Brisbane Heats team for the 2015 BBL. Barty however returned to tennis in 2016 and has been on the rise since then.
While Flintoff and McCullum bid goodbye to the sport a while ago, AB announced his retirement just a few months back and as per the poll was seen as the ideal candidate to return. The player himself however had a different choice, nominating Barty to be the best option for the franchise. “I think @ashbarty‘s got the best chance of the lot,” tweeted the former captain of the South African Cricket team.
Ash Barty yet to announce her comeback tournament
Barty has been missing from the Tour since she won the 2022 Australian Open being undefeated for the season so far. With the player expected to take the field for the 2022 Indian Wells Open followed by the 2022 Miami Open, the Australian shocked the fans when she announced she won’t be a part of the tournament as she is not yet ready physically after the Slam.
With the Clay season set to begin from April, the player is expected to grace the Tour soon but is yet to announce at which tournament will the fans be able to catch the 25-year old back in action.
