Ashleigh Barty, top seed at US Open 2021 faced a shocking defeat at the hands of Shelby Rogers in the third round at Flushing Meadows. The Australian, who earned the title of being the favorite at US Open this year, succumbed to a three-set defeat on Saturday.
Moreover, the Australian had her chances during the three round clash, as she was leading 5-2 in the third set. However, Rogers won the next three games, and forced the game into a tiebreaker. The top seed stated that it was a tough pill to swallow, having the match slip out of her hands in the dying stages.
“It’s never nice when you have a couple opportunities to serve out a match and can’t get it done. It’s a tough one to swallow. But it is what it is tonight. I found a way back into my match. I found a way to really turn it in my favour and just wasn’t able to just quite finish off. It’s disappointing but we’ll move on,” said Barty.

Ashleigh Barty believes that although the loss was disappointing, yet there were several positives to take from this encounter. The Australian stated that small margins decided the outcome of this match.
“There’s a lot tonight that’s disappointing, but a lot that’s positive. Not a match that I’ll dwell on for too long in the sense that there are so many ‘what ifs’. Millimeters could have changed things tonight. You accept that in tennis. That’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes and you move on it from it pretty quick,” added Barty.
Ashleigh Barty and Shelby Rogers have deep mutual respect for one another, both on and off the court. The top seeded Australian stated that she does not mind losing to a player of Shelby’s quality, given her character and personality.
“It sucks in tennis that there’s a winner and loser every single day, but sometimes you don’t mind losing to certain people. I think Shelby in a sense of her personality and her character, she’s certainly one of those for me,” said Barty.
