World No. 18 on the ATP Tour Aslan Karatsev recently opened up on the issues his compatriot and World No. 5 Andrey Rublev has been facing lately. Rublev himself had talked about facing difficulty with life on the tour and more importantly on his mental health.

With players spending a long time in bio-bubbles, mental health among athletes has been an issue lately and it is also taking a toll on them. There have been incidents where Rublev has been low on motivation to play and has not been in the right state of mind to play as he would have wanted.

“Right now I think I still have to improve the mental part of my game. I think that’s the main thing in my case, because the players who are better than me, know how to handle all these moments much better than me,” Rublev had said earlier while playing in Moscow at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.

Rublev and Karatsev have teamed up together at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals in the doubles and have won both their ties in 3-sets during the round-robin matches. Karatsev has had to battle not only the opponents but is also taking care of his compatriot keeping him focused during the match.

“In fact, I mainly try to calm him down and get his attention so that he is focused and that he does not get lost, otherwise it can be ‘dangerous’ for the rest of the game. As soon as I see him huffing or walking slowly, I run up to him and talk to him,” said Aslan who has been helping his partner during his tough time.

The pair of Rublev and Karatsev are expected to take on the Swedish pair of Andre Goransson and Robert Lindstedt when they meet in the quarter-finals. The Swedes have not dropped a single set coming into the quarter-finals and will pose a big threat against the Russians who were forced to battle hard and clinch the victory in the final set.

The quarter-final clash between the Russians and the Swedes will take place on the 2nd December in Madrid with the winning team set to continue their stay in the Spanish capital as the semi-finals and the finals will take place in Madrid itself.
