This season hasn’t been too kind to Lorenzo Sonego. He lost in the quarterfinals of the Cordoba Open, and he was knocked out of the Australian Open in the third round by Miomir Kecmanovic in four sets. Lorenzo, however, had a rather powerful performance this week, defeating Sebastian Baez in the round of 16 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to get into the quarter-finals. He bodes well with Clay and hence would fancy a good run this week.

Fernando Verdasco has had a challenging year as well. The lefty did not begin his season in Australia. Instead, he competed in two Challengers events in January, where he didn’t pull off any great wins. Verdasco, who was handed a wildcard into this week’s ATP event in Buenos Aires, got off to a strong start. He won against Thiago Monteiro in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, and made it to the quarter-finals to book a date with Sonego.

ATP Buenos Aires will see their third meet. Their head-to-head stands at a deadlock, at 1-1. They last faced off at the Austria Open in 2019 where Sonego won in straight sets.

Despite the fact that Verdasco’s performance has silenced the critics, Sonego has a far greater chance of winning. In the Argentine capital, he has landed a good move. After a convincing win against Sebastian Baez, the Italian will now go after the larger fish. Baez is set to dominate the quarter-finals, so expect a great battle.
