Adrian Mannarino vs Fernando Verdasco: Preview

Fernando Verdasco

The Frenchman is coming into this match experiencing a dismal season on the clay. From Monte Carlo Masters to the last event in Geneva, the 32-year-old has been dumped in the first rounds of four events, leading upto the one in Belgrade this week. In fact, Mannarino has won only two sets across tournaments on clay this year. He is seeded fourth in Belgrade and was also given a bye in the first round. The southpaw doesn’t fancy playing on the dirt.

On the other hand, the Spaniard too has lost all the three matches he played on the dirt this season, before he beat Lucas Pouille in straight sets yesterday in the opening round. His recent struggles with form and injuries have also pushed him outside of the top-100 for the first time since 2004. The 37-year-old had also tested positive for Covid-19 recently. However, a win over the Frenchman must have given the ATP veteran some confidence to progress ahead in the competition.

These two have met four times on the ATP tour till now. They are locked at 2-2. Their first few meetings was won by the Spaniard on hard courts. However, the next two went the Frenchman’s way on the grass. Interestingly, they have never crossed paths on the clay.

Both players are visibly struggling on the clay. While the Frenchman has never enjoyed playing on the surface, the Spaniard has produced decent results in the past. This match has all the ingredients to be a low-quality match, given the drop in form both players are experiencing. Expect this contest to have plenty of serve breaks and we could also see three full sets. Although Mannarino is seeded, we don’t see him beating his opponent to progress ahead in Belgrade.

Match Prediction: Fernando Verdasco should win in three sets.
