Thirty four year old Frenchman Monfils has been ranked as high as No.6 in the World. He has ten ATP Titles to his credit and is well known for his exceptional athleticism and entertaining brand of tennis. This year, he has played only a handful of tournaments. He started the year with a first round exit at the Australian Open, and then followed that up with another first round exit this time at the Italian Open.

In the Lyon Open when he beat Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil, he recorded his first victory on tour in fifteen months after eight consecutive defeats. Monfils will face Roberto Baena in his first encounter here. Baena is twenty eight years old and has one ATP Title to his name.

The Spanish player is a regular on the Challenger circuit, although he did manage to qualify for the Italian Open. Here he again won two qualifying matches to reach the main draw. Once there he overcame the challenges of Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, 6-0 6-4 to move into the second round.

Out of his ten ATP Titles, Monfils has won just one on clay. So needless to say but clay is not his best surface. But his main struggles in the last few months was with motivating himself to play in front of empty stands, but that has changed. With crowds coming in, one can expect Monfils to play his best tennis again.

Baena won a good first round match against an opponent who had reached the Quarter- finals at Lyon. This has the potential to be a good contest.

Match Prediction: Gael Monfils will beat Roberto Baena in three sets.
