Andrey Rublev had a somewhat disappointing Australian Open 2022, exiting at the third round to an admittedly difficult match against Marin Cilic. The Russian would come into the match with a hard-fought victory again Lucas Pouille in the previous round. The supremely talented Russian, who skipped the ATP Cup at the start of the year, reached the semi-finals of the ATP Rotterdam Open, where he lost in the semis to eventual champion Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Bonzi, on the other hand, is off to a slow start this season. In the first warmup match before the Australian Open in Adelaide, he lost in the first round, and in the second, he was eliminated in straight sets in the round of 16. He was beaten out of the Australian Open second round by Karen Khachanov, the 28th seed. He was eliminated in the first round of the next tournament in France. But, shortly before the open 13 province event, he made a comeback at the challenger competition in France. In the last round, he shocked a good higher-ranked Aslan Karatsev.
