Yoshihito Nishioka vs Sam Querrey: Match Preview

Yoshihito Nishioka

Nishioka comes into this tournament on the back of a fabulous show at the Lyon Open. The twenty-five year old Japanese reached the quarter-finals of the event, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas at that stage. Nishioka was particularly impressive in his Round of sixteen encounter against Gaël Monfils. The Japanese beat the local lad in a hard fought three set contest, winning 4-6 6-3 7-6. His first round match here is against American Sam Querrey.

Querrey is a former World No.23. He has a total of ten ATP Titles, out of which only one is on clay. He may not have won many titles on clay but his serve remains equally potent on all surfaces. Between the Australian Open 2021 and this event in Parma, the thirty three year old Query has appeared in only one single tournament, the Miami Open. At Miami he lost to Taiwanese player Lu Yen-hsun in straight sets 3-6 4-6.

Nishioka has in the past few months made it to the Quarter-finals of a hard court event, Singapore Open, and repeated the feat on clay, at Lyon, which proves his versatility. The serve remains the Japanese player’s perennial problem and ironically he will be playing someone who has built a career around his serves, Sam Querrey.

Querrey will be playing on clay for the first time this season and that will be a struggle for him. Nishioka will look to target the movement of Querrey on court.
