6^th seed Anett Kontaveit defeated Katerina Siniakova 6-2, 6-3 to progress to the second round of the Australian Open. Kontaveit had a stellar end to her season last year, she won two title at the back end of the season and finished as runner-up at the year-end WTA Finals.

Kontaveit was down 1-2 in the first set after Siniakova broke her serve in the third game. She bounced back immediately to win five games in a row to win the first set. In the second set, the Estonian was again down 1-2 but rallied back to win 5 out of the next six games to wrap up the set and match and move on to the next round.

Clara Tauson defeated local favourite Astra Sharma 6-3, 6-4. This was Tauson’s debut at the Australian Open, she lost in the qualifying rounds last year. The Australian Open is also Tausan’s first singles tournament of 2022.

Kontaveit has a 11-6 win-less record at the Australian Open. Her best result was a quarter final loss to former World.1 Simona Halep in 2020. Kontaveit had a breakthrough last season, but her form at Grand Slams was less than impressive. She failed to make it past the third round in any of the Slams and will be looking to improve that record this year.

Tauson had an impressive 2021 season. She won two WTA titles and made her debut in the top-40 of the WTA rankings. She is one of the players to look out for in the coming years, but Kontaveit has been in great form as of late and has much more experience in major tournaments than the teenager and will be looking to progress to the third round for the third successive year.
