Angelique Kerber vs Kaia Kanepi: Preview
Angelique Kerber had a disappointing first half of her 2021 season. She was knocked out in the opening round of both the Australian Open and the French Open. It wasn’t until the start of the grass-court season, that she managed to find her form. She won the Bad Homburg Open title and made it to the semi-finals of Wimbledon. She ended her season with a quarter-final loss to eventual champion Paula Badosa at the Indian Wells.
Kaia Kanepi won the 25k ITF tournament in Parnu last year. She made it to the third round of the Australian Open last year, her best Grand Slam result in 2 years. Considered to be one of the strongest servers on the WTA circuit, Kanepi is known for causing major upsets. This was also the case last year as she notched up wins against 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin and World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka.
Angelique Kerber vs Kaia Kanepi: Head-to-Head
This will be the fifth meeting of the duo and their first in seven years. Their current head-to-head stand at 2-2. Kerber won their last meeting, which was way back in 2014 at the WTA Sydney International in straight sets.
Angelique Kerber vs Kaia Kanepi: Prediction
Kerber will be playing her first match this year. She was not able to participate in WTA Sydney International after she tested positive for COVID. Following a dismal start to her season last year, the German was able to make a remarkable recovery by reaching the quarter-finals and fourth round of Wimbledon and US Open respectively. She will be keen to carry this momentum into her upcoming match.
Kanepi played in the Melbourne (Summer Set 1), a lead-up tournament to the Australian Open. She was defeated by Ana Konjuh of Croatia in three sets. Kanepi has failed to make it past the opening round in four out of her last six appearances at the Australian Open. The American will be relying on her powerful serve and groundstrokes as she takes on the former champion.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber to win in three sets.
