Elina Svitolina vs Fiona Ferro: Preview

15th seed Elina Svitolina will kick off her 2022 Australian Open campaign against France’s Fiona Ferro. Svitolina had a mixed season last year, wherein she failed to go past the fourth round of any Grand Slam. The lone bright spot for her was the bronze medal she won at Tokyo Olympics back in August, thus becoming the first tennis player from Ukraine to win a medal at the Olympics. She is yet to register a win this year and has crashed out in the first round itself of both the tournaments she has played in.

Fiona Ferro had an outstanding start to her campaign last year where she reached the third round of the Australian Open, her best showing at Melbourne Park so far and soon rose to a career-best ranking of 39.  However, injuries derailed her season as her ranking plummeted to a lowly 103.

Elena Svitolina and Fiona Ferro have played with each other once before and their head-to-head count stands at 1-0 in favor of the Ukrainian. Svitolina won the match in straight sets.

Svitolina has managed to advance to the second round at the Australian Open in the past eight years and would be hoping this would be the case this year as well as she looks to shrug off her poor run of form with a win and put an end to her 4 match losing streak.

Meanwhile, Fiona Ferro also hasn’t been in good form herself and has won only one once in her last six competitive matches.

Both the players haven’t won a single match this year and thus will be eager to put their losing streak behind and start their Australian Open campaign on a better note. The Ukrainian’s excellent defense and stamina might give her a slight advantage if the match stretches to three sets.

Prediction: Svitolina to win in three sets
