Elina Svitolina ended her 4 match losing streak after she defeated Fiona Ferro of France in the first round of the Australian Open 6-1, 7(7)-6(4). She won the first set comfortably after managing to hold her serve and managed to capitalize on Ferro’s errors. At 4-4 in the second set, Ferro managed to break the serve of the Ukrainian and was just a game away from forcing the match into the third set. However, Svitolina managed to break back in the next game and won the subsequent tie-break on her first match point itself.

Harmony Tan staged an upset in the first round as she defeated World No.42 Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in straight sets. Tan put on a brilliant display to defeat an opponent ranked 65 places above her as she blasted three aces and 29 winners past the Kazakh. This is Tan’s second win in the main draw of a Grand Slam, her first one was at Roland Garros last year.
