Emma Raducanu defeated Sloane Stephens 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 in the first round. Making her debut at the Australian Open, the Brit showed no sign of nerves as she bagelled her opponent in just 17 minutes. Radacanu failed to hold her serve in the first game of the second set as she made three double faults. She managed to break Stephen’s serve to make it 2-2, only to lose four games in a row and lose the set 6-2. The American again lost her groove as she made 17 unforced errors in the third set as Raducanu won the third set 6-1 to book her place in the second round.

Danka Kovinic defeated Su Jeong Jang 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in the first round. This is Kovinic’s first win in the main draw since 2017. In spite of making 57 unforced errors, Kovinic managed to edge out the qualifier Jeong Jang in a grueling 3-hour encounter.
