Iga Swiatek defeated qualifier Harriet Dart 6-3, 6-0 in the first round. Dart started the match on a positive note as she broke Swiatek early to take a 3-1 lead. However, the Pole won 5 consecutive games in a row to take the first set 6-3. She continued this momentum in the second set as she bagelled her opponent in 30 minutes and had 12 winners and just three unforced errors to round off the match comfortably.

Rebecca Peterson defeated wildcard entry Daria Seville 6-2, 6-3 in the first round. This is the Swede’s first win in the main draw in two years. Her best result at the Australian Open was a second-round defeat to former World No.1 Maria Sharapova. Peterson has two WTA titles to her name, both won in 2019 and her career-best ranking is No. 43 which she achieved following her two title wins.
