Paula Badosa extended her winning streak to six matches, after she defeated local favourite Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets. This was the Australian’s second consecutive defeat to Badosa.

The first set was a pretty even affair as both the players traded break of serves. Badosa was serving for the first set at 5-3, but Tomljanovic broke back to make it 5-4. Both the players took a medical timeout before resuming the tenth game. They traded multiple deuces before Badosa won the set on her fourth set-point. After struggling with her serve in the first set, Badosa managed to win all points on her first serve in the second set, as she bageled Tomljanovic 6-0 to progress to the second round. She won with a scoreline of 6-4,6-0.

Martina Trevisan worked her way through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw of the Australian Open for the third straight year running. In her first-round match, she won in straight sets against lucky loser Nao Hibina. Hibina replaced World No.81 Saisai Zheng, after the latter had to pull out with an injury. The Italian held all her service games and broke her opponent’s serve twice to win the first set. The second set was similar to the first, as Trevisan won the match 6-2, 6-3.

Badosa made multiple errors on her serve in the first set before delivering a near-perfect second set to win against Tomljanovic in the opening round. She made 21 unforced errors in the first set, but she found her form back in the second set as she blasted 4 aces and 14 winners past the Australian.

Trevisan has made it past the second round of a Grand Slam only once before, which was during her surprise run to the quarter-final at the Roland Garros in 2020. This match might be too big of a hurdle for the Italian as Badosa has only lost one match this year
