Sofia Kenin couldn’t match her exploits of 2020, in which she won the Australian Open title and finished runner-up at the Roland Garros, in her 2021 season. Her title defence at the Melbourne Park turned out to be futile as she was knocked out in the second round against unseeded Kaia Kanepi in straight sets. She struggled with her form and failed to win a single title in 2021 and couldn’t make it past fourth round of any of the Grand Slams, a far cry from her stellar 2020 season.

Madison Keys had a disappointing last season as well, her ranking plummeted to 65 and she finished outside the top-20 for the first time in seven years. The former World No.7 was forced to sit out at last year’s Australian Open after she tested positive for COVID-19.

Keys has bounced back from her second-round loss to Daria Kasatkina at the Melbourne (Summer Set) 2021 and is in the finals of the ongoing WTA Adelaide International-2 where she will be facing Alison Riske of France.

Kenin is yet to find her form and was knocked out in the first round of WTA Sydney Tennis Classic 2022 and in the quarter-finals of WTA Adelaide International to eventual champion Ash Barty.

An upset might be on the cards if Kenin fails to up her game, as she is yet to win a set against Keys on hardcourts, let alone a match. Meanwhile Keys will be confident going into this match after notching up wins against much higher-ranked opponents in Elina Svitolina and Coco Gauff.
