‘Back with a Bang’ Nick Kyrgios returns to winning ways after sensational win over Liam Broady in round 1 of the 2022 Australian Open

World No. 115 local boy Nick Kyrgios races past British qualifier Liam Broady in their round 1 meeting at the 2022 Australian Open played on the John Cain Arena that was ecstatic seeing one of their favourite entertainers come all guns blazing to win the match 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hour and 54 minutes.

Kyrgios hit 21 aces to Broady’s 6 and was sensational in his service having an 81% record on service while Liam could manage only 63%. While Nick had 26 unforced errors to Liam’s 22, the Australian hit 41 winners and conceded only 23 as he won a total of 90 points as compared to the Brit’s 70. Nick also fired the fastest serve of the match firing a 228 km/hr service while also using the ‘underarm serve‘ much to the crowd’s delight.

While Nick is currently ranked 115th in the world, he was well within the automatic qualification rank when the entries closed. As for Broady who is ranked 128th in the world, he had to enter the main-draw through the qualifiers but Kyrgios proved to be too good for him as the Brit was sent home packing while Nick now advances into the next round.

Next up for the Australian is World No. 2 and the top-seed of the tournament, Daniil Medvedev who was also the runner-up last year. In both of their previous two meetings, Kyrgios won both the matches and leads the Russian 2-0 in the head-to-head tie.

Medvedev comes into the tie with a straight-set win over Henri Laaksonen, winning the match 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(3) to kickstart his campaign in a comfortable win as he is now one of the heavy favourites for the title in Novak Djokovic’s absence.
