BANNED! Novak Djokovic on the verge of three-year ban from Australia

Tennis ace Novak Djokovic saga Down Under over last-minute VISA cancellation continues. The Serbian international’s visa was cancelled minutes after he landed in Melbourne. After waiting for hours at the airport and being questioned by the authorities Djokovic was rejected by the airport authorities as he wasn’t able to provide the required documents.

Ahead of the Australian Open, it was made clear that no unvaccinated personnel will be allowed in Melbourne Park for the Grand Slam. But the Serbian was given an exemption that allowed him to enter Australia and play at the Grand Slam. On his arrival, the exception that was handed to him by a team of medical experts did not guarantee him entry into the country as the Border forces informed him that his visa was denied by the State.

Novak Djokovic was instructed to leave the country on the very next flight but he decided to stay put and challenge the decision. The top tennis player took the matter to the federal court and a ruling is expected shortly.

Djokovic was taken into isolation where he was kept for almost 9 hours and was not allowed to contact anyone with police guards standing outside his room. As tensions flared up, the 34-year-old was moved into a quarantine hotel. Djokovic’s future in the Australian Open now hangs by a thread as the world awaits the court’s orders.

Novak Djokovic’s legal team has failed to provide the required documents to the court and his challenge is expected to collapse. In case his pleas are rejected by the court, not only the Serbian will be deported from Australia but he also faces a three-year ban from entering the country.

Professor of Public Law at the University of Sydney, Mary Crock, was quoted by the NCA Newswire today, warning: “The law on this is very weighted in favour of the government of the day.”Conversely, if you apply for the wrong visa, the discretion to be granted another visa at the point of entry is very limited.

And if a visa has been cancelled, the consequences of that are very long term – both for Australia and any other country he enters, because you are always asked ‘have you been deported or excluded’. If he’s deported from Australia, there’s a potential he could be excluded for three years.
