Mats Wilander, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, believes Daniil Medvedev needs to “become a better tennis player” in order to enhance his game ahead of the French Open. On Saturday, the world No. 2 glided through Andy Murray of the United Kingdom, a two-time Miami Open champion, and is seeking to overtake Novak Djokovic at the top of the ATP rankings once more, with the Serb unable to come to the United States given the lack of vaccination.
However, when it comes to his gameplay, Daniil Medvedev seems to be more inclined toward Hard courts other than grass courts and clay courts. But, as the World No. 2 player who bears the weight of the public’s expectations, ‘Med-Wed’ must demonstrate his versatility on other courts as well.

In an interview with Eurosport, the Former Swedish tennis ace has made it clear that he feels Medvedev should try to focus on becoming an all-court player after achieving two lifelong objectives in the last six months.
“Well, first of all, I have no idea how, if you are a Russian citizen, the war could not affect you somehow emotionally. I mean, I really think that’s important to point out. Now, if you put that aside – which is impossible to do, but if you’re able to do that – Daniil Medvedev has achieved the two goals in his tennis career, “ he said.
The Seven-times grand slam champion also stated that “Daniil Medvedev needs to improve his tennis” On all courts such as grass and clay, considering he is more comfortable on the hardcourts. “He won a Grand Slam and he became world No. 1. So what is the third goal after that? The third goal goes back to what we did when we were young. The goal is to improve and Daniil Medvedev needs to improve his tennis. Not on fast hard courts, but he needs to improve his tennis on slow hard courts. He needs to improve it on the clay court. He needs to improve it on the grass court.”
Lastly, Wilander concluded his statement by instructing Medvedev to work hard and “become a better tennis player.” In his words, “That’s not the case with Daniil Medvedev… But because he’s won a Grand Slam because he has become the world No. 1, he’s achieved that. Forget it now, Daniil, it’s time to go back to work and become a better tennis player.”
Daniil Medvedev is close to regaining No. 1 ranking
The reign of Daniil Medvedev at the top of the ATP rankings was brief. Novak Djokovic reclaimed the World No. 1 ranking without even competing in the Indian Wells Open, due to Medvedev’s early exit in the same tournament.
Medvedev, however, has improved his game in the Miami Masters, and is just two wins away from returning to the top. In order to retake the top rank, the Russian must go to the semifinals. In the third round, he defeated Pedro Martinez in straight sets and will face Jenson Brooksby in the last 16.
