World No. 6 Matteo Berrettini‘s plans to return to the Tour have now been delayed after the Italian No. 1 took to his Instagram account to inform about his decision to withdraw from the upcoming Masters events in Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome after taking the advice from his medical team.

The Italian had earlier injured his right hand and had to undergo surgery that also led to his withdrawal from the 2022 Miami Masters. While the surgery was successful, it has now sidelined last year’s Wimbledon runner-up cutting short his clay season as he has withdrawn his names from events till the Rome Masters which will conclude on 15th May.

With the 2022 French Open set to start on the 22nd of May, it could have been a tight window for him had he played the events. However, given his decision to withdraw from events within the next 5-weeks, his focus will be to comeback in Paris but it will all now depend on his recovery as there is only a week’s difference between the Rome Masters finals and the French Open’s commencement.

“Following advice from the medical experts, my team and I have decided that it is crucial I do not put time pressure on my recovery process. We have therefore decided I should withdraw from the Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome tournaments to ensure I give myself the proper amount of time to return at my highest level.

“Withdrawing from these events, particularly Rome, was an extremely tough decision, however, it is the right one to ensure many more years of competing at the highest level for the biggest trophies. Thanks very much for all the support. My recovery process is on track and I look forward to seeing you on-court soon,” wrote Berrettini in his Instagram post.

Matteo Berrettini likely to exit the Top-10 due to his absence in the coming weeks

Berrettini had a good Clay season last year. Despite an exit in the 2nd round in Monte-Carlo, Matteo won the 2021 Serbia Open where he will be dropping all 250 points this year. After the trip to Belgrade, Matteo had reached the finals in the 2021 Madrid Masters only to lose to Alexander Zverev. At the 2021 Rome Masters where he was the home favourite, he lost in the 3rd round. With a good haul last year, his rankings will take a massive hit and could likely land him outside the Top-10.
