Diego Schwartzman has always been a force on clay courts. The Argentine’s prowess on clay is not unknown as he once again reminded everyone that he can be a major force at the Monte Carlo Masters. Schwartzman made a terrific comeback after going a set down to win against Karen Khachanov in their first round clash. He defeated the Russian 6(5)-7, 6-3, 6-3.

However, the highlight of the game was not Schwartzman‘s great character that he showed in making a stunning comeback after going a set down against a very tricky opponent. His meeting with Khachanov had so much drama that it overshadowed his impressive turnaround.

The 29-year-old had a huge argument with the chair umpire regarding a line call. Later Schwartzman was once again disappointed as he argued whether a shot was in or out in the deciding third set. Once the decision was made Argentina came up with a loud roar, “No” at the decision made. The umpire thought he had to step in as he told the Argentine to calm down. “Calm down. You can’t shout like that,” the chair umpire corrected a very nervous Diego Schwartzman.

The Argentine is known for his calm demeanour and this reaction from him after a few dicey calls from the chair umpire caught all the attention of the tennis fraternity. It was unusual for Schwartzman to react that way but it also sheds light on how poor the umpiring has been off late which has made players agitated. If it was a match deciding point, an error from a chair umpire can largely affect the outcome of a match and hence players who are always looking to win get irritated by some calls.

It was an unusual game for Schwartzman as he lost the first set to Khachanov in the tiebreaker and though he came back he was never his dominant best. Clay is his prowess and people expect the 29-year-old to come out and perform in these tournaments. So it was pretty surprising for some of them.

Schwartzman lost a lot of composure after that argument with the chair umpire as he was broken by Khachanov in the third set. But he gathered himself and came back to win five out of the next six games to seal the second round berth at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Argentine reached the quarterfinals at the Monte Carlo Masters back in 2017 and will be looking to replicate that form or even better that outcome this time. But it mostly depends on how he is feeling on the court. The 29-year-old has reached the finals in Argentina and also in Rio, proving that he has a good rhythm. He lost both finals against Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz respectively.

Schwartzman will face Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in the second round in Monaco. The Argentine will start the game as a genuine favourite to progress to the net round. Fucsovics defeated Llyod Harris in three sets to set up a second round date with the Argentine.
