Roger Federer is a household name in the world of tennis and holds 20 Grand Slam titles to his name. He is the pioneer of “Big Three” which refers to the players who revolutionized tennis and are the most influential tennis players ever.
Federer turned professional in 1998 and since then he has won 103 singles titles which makes him the player with the second-highest titles in the Open Era. Federer is currently 40 years old. 2021 was not the brightest season for Federer as he did not play many big tournaments and couldn’t leave a huge mark in the ones in which he played.
Federer then called off his season early in August after a knee injury and stated that he would be off tour for many months in order to recover.
Can Roger Federer win a Grand Slam in 2022?
Roger Federer will not be playing in the Australian Open 2022 in order to recover from the third round of knee surgery he had to get.
“I’ve got to first walk again properly, run properly. Then do the sidesteps and all the agility work. And then, eventually, I’m gonna be back on the tennis court. But, it’s gonna take me a few more months you know. And then, we’ll see how things are at some point next year,” said the Swiss player about his plans to return to tennis.
Federer has given enough proof in his career to warrant hopes about winning big matches from him but his recent injury-plagued season and increasing age have become a deterrent for people to expect him to compete among the newer top players. Still, if Federer manages to heal completely from his injury and luck favors him, then a Grand Slam title could be on the cards.
2018 and 2019 saw great tennis coming from Federer and it was only after having knee surgery that his game suffered, therefore tennis enthusiasts expect big things from him when he does decide to return. “If I am there, it will be for fun. In April or May I will give updates if I will be there or not, now it is too early to tell,” said Federer.
Having said that, Federer’s best bet of winning a major is Wimbledon which he most probably will miss. So as much as the fans want him to win, it looks unlikely that Federer would win a major in 2022.
