When the draw of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters was released, all eyes were on one single match. World No.1 Novak Djokovic, who was gearing up to play in just the second tournament of the year, and Carlos Alcaraz, who recently won the Miami Open title, were placed in the same half of the draw. Djokovic and Alcaraz could have potentially squared off against each other in the quarter-finals. It was one of the battles to look forward to as an upcoming star took on the current great in tennis. But fans’ hopes of watching the much hyped-up, came crashing down as the duo faced early exits in Monte-Carlo.

After receiving byes in the first round, both Djokovic and Alcaraz lost their respective second-round matches. Djokovic lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina whereas Alcaraz lost to Sebastian Korda, both in three sets. Djokovic’s much-awaited return to court ended with a shock loss as it clearly showed he was way off the pace and had a long way to go before he returns to his top form. Whereas for Alcaraz, playing multiple matches on the trot must’ve taken a toll on the teenager, and the transitions from hard courts to clay wasn’t easy either.

With the clay-court swing just beginning, there are many more tournaments where Alcaraz and Djokovic can lock horns against each other. But fans were quick to take a jibe at the much hyped-up potential quarter-finals, which didn’t even take place.

Twitter went into a meltdown as soon as Alcaraz lost his match. Some made sarcastic remarks saying the potential quarter-finals may not take place. While the grand poster which was made in anticipation of Alcaraz and Djokovic’s clash wasn’t spared either. While some expressed their disappointment over not getting to watch such an enthralling clash, some said the match-up was needlessly hyped.
