“Can’t wait to do it in front of a Canadian crowd” Leylah Fernandez to lead Canada in the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers next month
Leylah Fernandez
World No. 21 Leylah Fernandez will be the Canadian No. 1 heading into next month’s 2022 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers that are scheduled during the week of 15th and 16th April. Representing Canada, the team will comprise Leylah, Rebecca Marino, Gabriela Dabrowski, Francoise Abanda and Carol Zhao.
The tie will be played at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, which will mark the return of the BJK Cup to Canada after a gap of 4 years when Leylah was yet to represent her nation in the competition which was formerly known as the Fed Cup. The surface will be hardcourts and given Leylah’s exploits on the surface, the fans will be buzzing to support the team when they host Latvia for the tie.
“We are thrilled to be playing in Canada for our tie against Latvia. It will be the first home tie for some of the girls on the team, including myself. We are really pleased with the team we were able to put together, and are confident that Leylah, Gabriela, Rebecca, Francoise, and Carol will give it all they’ve got to secure the win for Canada and qualify for the Billie Jean King Cup Finals,” said Heide El Tabakh, the team captain.
“Wearing the Canadian colours is always and honour”: Leylah Fernandez
While so far Leylah was just one of the players on the team, her success during the 2021 season and little of the 2022 season where she has already won a title when she defended her title at the 2022 Monterrey Open, the youngster will have a lot of hopes on her shoulders to guide her nation into the Finals of the competition that will be held later in the season.
“I’m really excited to be playing at this year’s Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers. I always have so much fun playing at these ties and I’m excited to finally be able to do it on home soil. Wearing the Canadian colours on the court is always an honour and I can’t wait to do it in front of a Canadian crowd,” said Fernandez on the prospect of playing in the BJK Cup in front of her compatriots.
