World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is the latest great of the sport to notice the talent of the Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz who is impressing everyone with his talent and skills despite just being 18-year old. With three tour titles, each in the ATP-250, ATP-500 and ATP-1000 categories, the rise of the youngster has been tremendous.

Alcaraz came to the limelight in the last season with consistent performances across surfaces while also reaching the quarter-finals of the 2021 US Open becoming the youngest quarter-finalist of the major in the Open Era. While he missed out due to an untimely injury, he wrapped up the season by winning the 2021 NextGen Finals.

With Alcaraz’s win in the Miami Masters this year bringing the youngster into the conversation for the big titles during the Golden Swing of the Tour this season, Djokovic talked about the prospect of having a new star breaking out on the Tour and challenging the veterans for the titles.

“He is very strong mentally. He is a very complete player. Everyone expected him to land one of the biggest trophies on clay because it was his most successful surface so far, but he did it in Miami in such impressive style. I wish him all the best and I think it’s great for our sport that we have a new star. I don’t know him very well, I’ve never trained with him, but he has the reputation of being a very nice guy, very respectful, and he gets along very well with all the players,” said Djokovic during the media day in Monte-Carlo.

With both Novak and Carlos into the main draw of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, the two players can meet in a potential match-up in the quarter-finals if both are able to reach the last-8 of the first Clay Masters of the season. To start the campaigns, Djokovic will take on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina while Alcaraz starts against Sebastian Korda.
