World No. 11 Carlos Alcaraz‘s much-hyped debut at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters ended in a defeat as American young gun Sebastian Korda won the tie 7-6(2), 6-7(5), 6-3 and advanced into the third round as he is also making his debut at the tournament. This was Alcaraz’s 6th tournament of the season after a busy March that saw him reach the semis of Indian Wells and won the title in Miami Masters.

Having won the finals in Miami on 3rd April, Alcaraz came to Monte-Carlo and played the match on 13th April having just 10 days to return home, switch to Clay and then move back to Monaco for the tournament. While the schedule is not hectic for an average Tour player, former World No. 1 and 6-time champion Boris Becker believed that the youngster should have been well-rested and advised him to skip tournaments if need be.

Alcaraz is scheduled to play in the 2022 Barcelona Open followed by the Masters events in Madrid and Rome in the preparation for the 2022 French Open where many dub Alcaraz as one of the dark horses for the Grand Slam in Paris. But Becker believes that a packed schedule like this is too dangerous and could make him injury-prone.

“I hope he won’t play in Monaco, Barcelona or Madrid or Rome because I think it’s too dense a programme. He needs a break, he’s human. When you play while tired, the first injuries occur. It is very important to find the right method between what the tournaments can bring you and the famous match too many which can stop your dynamics,” said Becker as reported by WeloveTennis.

Carlos Alcaraz remains positive after the defeat in Monte-Carlo

With the defeat being quite a big shocker, Alcaraz has stayed positive. “Well, I’m a bit disappointed with myself. I had a lot of chances to be up in the match and close to win, but, I mean, these losses sometimes is good to live. You have to play, as I said, to play matches. But I didn’t think about the expectation that the people has to me. I mean, I just focused on me and what I have to do, but as I said, you have to play on clay court more matches (smiling). “I lost, didn’t die. There is a new chance to get better next week,” said Alcaraz.
