Andy Murray, the former world number one, becomes the latest athlete to pledge to support Ukraine as the country’s attempts to fight the Russian forces who are looking to invade Ukraine move into the second week of war as the two forces battle on the borders.
The Russia-Ukraine war has been a cause of chaos in the world, and Ukraine has already lost a lot of civilians. With millions of children at risk as the crisis worsens, the organization has been supplying clean water and nutritious food to families, transporting critical supplies to families who have been forced to evacuate, and much more.
Since the commencement of the Russian invasion on February 24th, two million people have fled Ukraine, predominantly women and children, according to the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR. Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special operation.”
Murray, the 3-time Grand Slam, who is set to play his first round at the Indian Wells will be hoping to get further in the tournament. Even though his career has slowed down at this point, the Brit will have an extra dollop of motivation up his sleeve to be able to support humanity.
“Over 7.5m children are at a risk with the escalating conflict in Ukraine, so I’m working with @UNICEF_uk to help provide urgent medical supplies and early childhood development kits,” Murray said on Twitter. “It’s vital education continues, so UNICEF is working to enable access to learning for displaced children, as well as supporting the rehabilitation of damaged schools, together with replacement equipment and furniture,” he added to the thread.
“The guy just consistently gets it” Andy Roddick reacts to Andy Murray’s announcement
With the chaos surrounding the world and sportspersons also getting affected in consequence, several tennis stars have spoken up about the war in solidarity for Ukraine. But Murray has taken the biggest stride yet by being part of such a big initiative.
The Brit has a lengthy history of involvement with charity organizations, serving as a global ambassador for UNICEF, United for Wildlife, Malaria No More, and the World Wildlife Fund. He also headlined the Rally For Cancer exhibition, an exhibition that generated funds for The Royal Marsden, a world-class cancer clinic where his buddy and former ATP player Ross Hutchins was treated at Queen’s Club in 2013.
Murray had donated his 45,000 euro prize money out from Mutua Madrid Open video game tournament in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, to the NHS and the ATP’s Player Relief Programme. In 2014, he had received the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award.
Murray’s efforts impressed former Grand Slam champion and World No. 1 Andy Roddick, who took to Twitter to express his admiration and tweeted, “The guy consistently gets it. Like every time.” On Tuesday, the ATP, WTA, ITF and the four Grand Slams also announced that they will be making a joint donation of $700,000 in aid of humanitarian relief as well as to support Ukraine’s tennis federation.
