Marin Cilic vs Jurij Rodionov: Preview
Former World No. 3 Marin Cilic has been in great form lately. He thrashed top seed Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinal of the Stuttgart Open on Friday and booked his place in the semi-final. Shapovalov was caught off-guard by some high-quality serves by Cilic.
Although Shapovalov gave a tough fight, Cilic eventually won the game without much hassle in straight sets by 7-5, 7-6. The Croatian tennis star finished the game in less than 2 hours. Even in the round of 16, Cilic dominated the proceedings and defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets by 6-3, 6-2.
The 2014 U.S. Open champion is yet to drop a set this week. Before defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili, the Croatian thrashed Germany’s Rudolf Molleker by 7-5, 6-3. In order to progress into the final of the tournament, Cilic would now have to go past Jurij Rodionov.
22-year-old Jurij Rodionov has played some really tight games. The young gun from Austria seems to have nerves of steel as he went past the supremely talented Dominik Koepfer after dropping the first set. He eventually won the round of 32 contest by 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Marin Cilic vs Jurij Rodionov: Head to Head
This will be the very first time when Cilic and Rodionov will play against each other.
Marin Cilic vs Jurij Rodionov: Prediction
Jurij Rodionov has been in fine touch. Although he got a walkover in the round of 16 against Peter Gojowczyk, the Austrian defeated Peter Gojowczyk in the quarter-finals in three hard-fought sets. After dropping the first set, Rodionov made a magnificent comeback and ended up winning the contest by 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.
Rodionov has surely played well but he hasn’t dominated his opponents as Cilic has. It would be fair to say that Cilic is a very tough opponent for Rodionov to get past as the 2014 U.S. Open champion has got all the tricks in his kitty which can bamboozle any opponent.
Prediction: Marin Cilic to win in straight sets.
