US Open 2021: Coco Gauff survives first round scare, beats Magda Linette

Coco Gauff

American teen sensation Coco Gauff proved her mettle once again as he came from a set down to win her first round match at the 2021 US Open against Pole Magda Linette on Louis Armstrong Stadium. Gauff beat Linette in three sets 5-7,6-3,6-4 to advance into the second round.

Gauff had shaky start but managed to keep her serve in place. She struggled on her backhand and wasn’t able to get the decisive break. Instead, she was broke late in the set and eventually lost it 5-7.

But she was able to break Linette’s momentum in the second set and got a decisive break. She reduced her errors from the first set and took control of most of the rallies. She was attacking the Pole’s backhand and her plan worked well. She held serve and went on to win the set 6-3.

The young American, who had the backing of the home crowd, wasn’t going to let her momentum go away. She kept her level of play unfazed and kept her error count low. Linette aided her with a lot of unforced errors but Gauff too hit winners left, right and center as and when needed. She just needed one decisive break of serve and won the set 6-4.

Gauff will now face fellow American Sloane Stephens in a blockbuster second round match.
