Thanasi Kokkinakis claimed his maiden ATP title after he defeated Arthur Rinderknech in the finals of Adelaide International 2. It was a long wait for the young Australian who has had to fight several career-threatening injuries in the past few years.
What’s makes this more special for Thanasi Kokkinakis is the fact that he claimed his maiden title in front of his home fans. The Australian was simply outstanding throughout the tournament, as he defeated former US Open champion, Marin Cilic in a thrilling semifinal encounter.
Roger Federer, 20 time Grandslam champion congratulated the youngster for claiming the title in Adelaide via a message on Instagram. Just a day later, Roger Federer’s Big Three rival, Novak Djokovic also congratulated Kokkinakis for finally claiming his maiden ATP title.
“Congrats on your maiden title in your home town, Thanasi. After all the hardships injuries have caused you, I am sure this even feels sweeter. You deserve this. Great for tennis, good luck for Melbourne,” Novak Djokovic’s private message on Instagram.

Thanasi Kokkinakis was a set down in the final, before he made an epic comeback. The Australian won the second set tiebreak, as the home crowd spurred on their tennis star. It has been an incredible run for Kokkinakis who has beaten some top players to the title.
The Australian defeated second seed, John Isner in another thrilling second round encounter, where each set was decided in a tiebreaker. Throughout the past week, he has kept the Australian fans on their feet. He will now look to recover in time for the all important Australian Open 2022.
Novak Djokovic never shies away from congratulating his peers on tour. He did exactly the same, as he sent a message of appreciation to Thanasi Kokkinakis. However, the Serbian will have to pack his bags soon, as the defending champion will be deported back to Serbia, as ordered by the court on Sunday.
