The Australian duo of Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis stormed into the finals of Men’s Doubles event, as they toppled the third seeds, H. Zeballos and Marcel Granollers. This means that we are all set for an all-Australian final, as the pairing of Kyrgios-Kokkinakis will face Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in the finals on Saturday.

Whilst Nick Kyrgios was seemingly annoyed by the questions asked during the press conference, Thanasi Kokkinakis instilled a sense of calmness with his subtle yet clever replies. On being asked if an Australian final takes the attention away from them, Kokkinakis replied that fans can support the pairing of their choice. According to him, the most important things is that fans are treated to some magnificent action like they have been in the last two weeks.

At the end of the day they can support who they want to support, but hopefully they’re for us. We couldn’t ask for anything more as far as the crowd support so far. There were a few (fans) in their match, there were a lot in our match, and hopefully that tells the story,” said Kyrgios.

Moreover, Thanasi Kokkinakis also suggested that ticket prices could be reduced for fans to fill into the stadium for an Australian final on Saturday.

Ticket prices will be very expensive for the Men’s Doubles final, as it is held in the same session as the Women’s Singles final, which features Ashleigh Barty. Hence, Thanasi Kokkinakis suggested that there could be separate tickets for fans only wanting to watch the Doubles final. Although, CEO of Tennis Australia, Craig Tiley would not like the idea, yet it is something that can be worked upon.

Hopefully we can get as many people in the stadium as possible. Craig (Tiley) might not be happy with this, but if that means dropping a couple of prices so we can fill the stands, whatever can get it packed or whatever he’s allowed – the more the better, the atmosphere will be unreal,” Thanasi said.

Thanasi Kokkinakis revealed that winning was never their main objective, as their main priority was to have fun on the court, and give their fans a time to remember. Moreover, Kokkinakis believes as athletes, it is their responsibility to deliver entertainment to fans who have paid some big money to watch them play.

Honestly, winning is second. It sounds stupid, but winning has been our second priority every time. We hope to have fun, enjoy ourselves, enjoy our time on court. Hopefully they feel like they’ve paid good money to watch us,” Kokkinakis said.
