Nick Kyrgios and Carlos Bernardes
During the Australian’s Miami Open match against Jannik Sinner, Nick Kyrgios received a game penalty for shattering his racket in fury as he continued an altercation with umpire Carlos Bernardes. As a result of losing the first set, he began the second set with a breakdown and was pursued by a court invader who sought to take a photo with the Australian after his outburst.
Nick Kyrgios had a tumultuous opening set, grumbling about the disparity between the Grandstand and Stadium courts while playing his first match of the week against Sinner on Grandstand. After his walkie-talkie went off mid-rally in the first set, the world No. 102 turned his attention to chair umpire Carlos Bernardes.

The Australian had previously got a code violation for audible profanity earlier in the first set and was given the first punishment, a point loss, during the tiebreak. When the ninth seed won the first set 7-6(3), Kyrgios resumed his outburst at the umpire while also speaking to his box. As he returned to his bench for the changeover, the 26-year-old proceeded to yell at the umpire, demanding to know why he had been charged with “unsportsmanlike behaviour.”
When Kyrgios destroyed his racket and sought a supervisor, Bernardes gave the former world No. 13 a game penalty, meaning he would start the second set down a break. As both players proceeded to the baseline to begin the second set, with Sinner ahead 1-0, the game was momentarily halted as security came onto the court to accompany an intruder who ran on in an effort to take a photo with the Aussie, who had just received his second penalty.
When Kyrgios was poised to serve at the baseline, Carlos Bernardes was obliged to ask a ball girl to pick up a loose ball, sparking additional sarcastic applause from the world No 102, which led to the audience joining in, booing and heckling the umpire. At last, having no choice, Bernardes was forced to retaliate against the rowdy fans, saying, “I know you’re against me, but just some respect.”
