“Centre Court is Roger Federer’s court” Daniel Evans talks about Federer and his Wimbledon memories
Daniel Evans
Daniel Evans will enter the Wimbledon 2021 as the British No. 1 as he sits on the 26th spot and will be the 22nd seed of the Grand Slam. As the highest ranked local boy, all eyes in Britain will be on Daniel as he prepares to make his 10th appearance at the All-England Club and his 6th main-draw appearance.
Evans played the 2021 Nottingham Challenger to kickstart his Grass campaign for the season where he was defeated in the quarter-finals. He later played at the Queen’s Club 2021 where he lost to eventual champion Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals, his last appearance on Grass before coming to play at the Wimbledon Championships.
Evans talks about the bubble life at Wimbledon
Speaking in the post conference ahead of his first round clash at the All-England Club, Evans talked about his practice sessions and how he is managing his time in the bio-bubble.
“I practiced with whichever guys were here. Practiced with (Alexander) Zverev, Roger (Federer), today with Diego Schwartzman. So some good practice, looking forward to get going. It’s nice to be back at Wimbledon. I think they’ve done a great job with the bubble, the hotel’s been very relaxed and I’m enjoying it.
“It’s a very big hotel, good places to eat, it’s obviously not got any other guests so it’s a very secure bubble and has got good treatment areas. It’s a nice room, living in comfortable. It’s a hard process to get it all together but it seems for me as a player it has been very smooth getting tested and etc, so it’s been good.”
“Roger Federer is the leader of the sport” says Daniel Evans
In a twisted question about the affection Federer gets in Britain and is often the fan favourite, Evans talked about how Federer is a global icon.
“I don’t think it’s just this country. I think he’s pretty iconic, he’s the leader of the sport. I think wherever he goes, he has a good following. Centre Court and Roger Federer, it’s sort of his court, where’s he won the most matches. So I think it’d be good for the public to get to see him here again.“
“Obviously last year there was no event, so I think all the things the public have missed, they’ll get to see again this year, including Andy (Murray). So I think it’ll be a great good tournament and last year I think it was sorely missed.” said Evans about Wimbledon being back and fans getting to see their favourite stars.
Daniel Evans recalls fond memories of Wimbledon from childhood
Recalling his childhood memories of seeing the Wimbledon on television, Evans spoke what it means to be playing at the oldest Grand Slam.
“I think it’s a big sense of pride to be back playing at Wimbledon. I think for the country, anyone who knows this two weeks, tennis is on the telly. My memory is coming back from school, tennis would be on the television. It was always just on, didn’t took much notice who was playing, but you’d see the grass in the background, that’s sort of my memory of these two weeks.
“For two weeks, tennis takes centre stage and that’s a fun memory. This is what I love so much about coming here, it brings back the memories from where you started out. Your opening goal is to get at Wimbledon. It sorts of brings you back to being a bit younger and where you started out so it’s nice to be back here.” said Evans about Wimbledon taking place again.
Daniel Evans will be up against Feliciano Lopez in a rather tricky fixture in the opening round of the Wimbledon 2021.
