World No.2 Daniil Medvedev registered yet another solid win at the 2021 US Open where he beat German Dominik Koepfer in the second round on Arthur Ashe stadium. The Russian beat Koepfer without breaking much sweat in straight sets 6-4,6-1,6-2.

The Russian has been in the form of his life this season and is one of the favorites to challenge Novak Djokovic this fortnight in New York. He is coming off a title victory at Toronto and a semifinal outing at Cincinnati and then started the US Open with a victory over Richard Gasquet.

He carried the same form in the second round and was on song right from the word go. He was backing his serve with some fascinating baseline strokes in the first set. Koepfer too matched him at the start and held his serve well. But all Medvedev needed was a break of serve as he clinched the first set 6-4.

The first set proved to be the tightest of the three, as Medvedev proved to be too good for Koepfer. The Russian turned beast mode on an absolutely demolished the German from the baseline. He had a double break of serve in both the remaining sets and won them convincingly 6-1,6-2.

In the on-court interview, Medvedev addressed his level on court and analyzed the match. “It was a great level from me,” he said.

“There were a few tight moments in the match which I managed to hold well and play well. At one moment his level dropped a little bit and I took advantage of it. I am really happy to be through in less than two hours.”

He further added that he has been playing a lot of strong opponents on tour alongwith Djokovic which has helped him a lot. “I just try to win. I have been playing a lot of strong guys on the Tour,” he said.

“It is the same with Novak [Djokovic]. You saw it yesterday. Every match he plays is a challenge. The more I win throughout my career and here in New York in this stadium, the better I will feel.”

The second seed at the end addressed the crowd and said that it was a pity that the US Open couldn’t have fans last year.

He added: “It is really special to be back with the crowd in New York. It was a pity that last year we couldn’t have the crowd. I am just trying to be myself, sometimes in the bad moments as some people can remember and sometimes in the good moments, I just try to be myself and then the people can decide.”
