Daniil Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev was defeated in the semifinals of Cincinnati Masters on Saturday, as he faced a three-set defeat against fellow Russian, Andrey Rublev. Interestingly, it was Medvedev’s first ever loss against Rublev, as the latter reaches his second Masters final in 2021.
Daniil Medvedev might have lost the match, but he made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The world number two kicked the camera in anger, as was bothered by its presence on court. The Russian collided with the camera whilst he was in a point, and stated that he could have injured his hand. While the camera was being set up, he kicked it in anger, showing his frustration.
Daniil Medvedev says he ‘almost injured’ his hands during the semifinals
Daniil Medvedev was seen shouting at the chair umpire that the camera could have broken his hand, and wanted it to be taken off court. The Russian was displeased with the camera’s presence on-court since the start of the tournament.
“Take it away. I almost broke my hand,” Daniil Medvedev was quoted saying. This is the second time in just about two weeks, when Daniil Medvedev has been involved in on-court drama. He was earlier involved in verbal argument with the chair umpire during the first round of Canadian Masters against Alexander Bublik.
The Russian will now hope to recover in time, as he prepares for the US Open, which commences next week. The world number two reached the finals of US Open in 2019, where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal in a five set thriller. Last week, Medvedev claimed the Canadian Open 2021 title, defeating Reilly Opelka in the finals in straight sets.
