ATP Halle 2021: Daniil Medvedev bows out in the first round, loses in straight sets to Jan-Lennard Struff

Daniil Medvedev’s return to the grass courts was short lived as he faced a straight sets defeat against the home favorite, Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round of Halle Open 2021. The Russian lost by a score line of 7-6, 6-3, which leaves the draw wide open.

Daniil Medvedev was seeded first at Halle Open, and he was expected to put up a good show. The world number two secured his best finish at French Open, after reaching the quarterfinals in Paris, where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.

Daniil Medvedev was nowhere close to his best on Tuesday, as Jan-Lennard Struff capitalized on the Russian’s errors. The German had a good run at French Open 2021, where he reached the fourth round.

Daniil Medvedev served seven aces during the match, whereas, Jan Lennard Struff served nine aces. However, the Russian also had five double faults to his name. The top seed struggled to win points on his second serve, and won just about 40% of those points.

Jan-Lennard Struff converted three of his four break point opportunities, whereas, Medvedev could convert just two of his six chances. Medvedev won 74 points in the whole match, compared to the German’s tally of 77 points.

It was a poor start to the grass court season for the top seed, Daniil Medvedev who will go back to the drawing board. The world number two has less than two weeks to prepare for Wimbledon 2021, which will be held from June 28.

On the other hand, Jan Lennard Struff secured his second win over a top 10 ranked player, after he had defeated Andrey Rublev in the first round of French Open 2021.
